Student Support Placement Officer (50d)

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including: GP Clinics, primary health Care, counselling, National Disability and Insurance Scheme and community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

We are seeking a dynamic person who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent to work as our Student Support Placement Officer 50d who will be responsible for supporting the students and Coordinator of a new program funded through Edith Cowan’s University Departments of Rural Health (UDRH). The program aim is to build rural health workforce capacity through providing innovative rural health placements facilitating quality rural learning experiences, including cultural training and working with Aboriginal communities and people.

You will be provided with many opportunities which will include:

  • Supporting students undertaking their rural health placement in developing understanding of Aboriginal culture
  • Under guidance you will participate in developing and delivering cultural training packages
  • Mentoring Aboriginal students who are part of the program
  • Work with SWAMS Cultural Committee to develop and implement in ternal Cultural Framework
  • Deliver internal and external cultural training

Essential Criteria

  • It is a genuine occupational qualification of this position to be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent in accordance with section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and contemporary issues affecting them, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with communities, elders and other key Aboriginal stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with university students on placement in rural areas and support their successful placement

Desirable Criteria

  • Possession of or substantial progress toward a relevant qualification or relevant lived experience and willingness to complete further education.
