Social Worker

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of primary health and community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development. 

To provide high quality, culturally secure case management, advocacy, support, and capacity building services to Aboriginal people in the South West Region. Display a high level of self-management, organisation, and problem-solving ability.

Specific requirements of this position include but are not limited to;

 Essential Criteria

  • Possession of tertiary qualifications in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the AASW (or respective professional body)
  • Demonstrated experience or understanding of working with Aboriginal people
  • Demonstrated understanding of the inter-generational impacts of Stolen Generation policies
  • Demonstrated experience of providing culturally appropriate case management, counselling, and advocacy and support services to families, children, and individuals
  • Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality issues
  • Demonstrated community development/capacity building skills
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well and with flexibility in a team environment
  • Proven organisational abilities including computer skills, record keeping skills and submission writing
  • Current car licence and ability to travel throughout the South West Region

Desirable Criteria

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Experience in youth work
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislative requirements

All candidates must have a current WA Driver’s License and will be required to undertake a National Police Check prior to beginning employment.

 The preferred candidate will be required to provide a clear drug and alcohol screen prior to offer of employment.
