General Practitioner

SWAMS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation delivering services throughout Noongar Country. SWAMS has been provided with new funding for Katanning and Narrogin to deliver health services to the Aboriginal community. SWAMS will be delivering a range of services in these towns including GP clinics, health care, counselling and NDIS.

SWAMS is looking for General Practitioners (GPs) who are passionate about Aboriginal health. General Practitioners are expected to work as members of a multi-disciplinary team, led by the Senior Medical Officer. The role involves direct provision of General Practice Services, support for and sharing skills with other team members and participation in key primary health care initiatives and community consultation.

The GPs will operate with a commitment to the principles, practices and policies of SWAMS and in particular ensure that Aboriginal culture is reflected in all activities.

You will join a supportive team including Primary Health Nurses, Child Health Nurses, Midwives, Chronic Condition Nurses, Mental Health and Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners.

About our GP Clinics

Bunbury Clinic (22.8 hours)

The Bunbury Clinic is open Monday to Friday from 08.45am to 5.06pm. Bunbury runs a Thursday evening clinic until 8pm that is covered on a rotational basis. We are looking for a GP to work in our Bunbury Clinic for 3 days a week.

Katanning Clinic – Thursdays & Fridays (15.2 hours a week)

The GP Clinic in Katanning runs from 08.45am to 5.06pm on Thursdays and Fridays each week. Katanning may suit a candidate willing to travel from Albany. For candidates living out of Katanning, SWAMS will provide overnight accommodation and cover mileage, meals, and incidental expenses. All travel is done during working hours.

Narrogin Clinic – Tuesdays & Wednesdays (15.2 hours a week)

The GP Clinic in Narrogin runs from 08.45am to 5.06pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week. Narrogin may suit a candidate willing to travel from Perth or Northam. For candidates living out of Narrogin, SWAMS will provide overnight accommodation and cover mileage, meals, and incidental expenses. All travel is done during working hours.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a General Practitioner.
  • Hold valid provider and prescriber numbers from the Health Insurance Commission of Australia.
  • Vocational Registration, or hold a Fellowship with FRACGP, FACRRM.
  • Ongoing participation in Continuing Education programs as directed by either RACGP or ACRRM.
  • Have a passion for improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people
  • Ability to mentor and train staff
  • Ability to use IT systems such as telehealth and patient management software
  • Have community connections in desired location or ability to build community relations.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in primary health care and chronic condition management

 Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding of Aboriginal Culture, values and health issues.
  • Awareness of AGPAL standards and requirements for maintaining General Practice Accreditation.
  • Clinical experience in an Aboriginal Medical Service/Aboriginal health
